In honour of Ramadan happening this month, we’ve been learning about what it means to celebrate and reflect on gratitude. The children learned that during Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Through fasting, many Muslims aim develop empathy for those who are less fortunate, while also practicing generosity, kindness and gratitude.
Inspired by this idea of reflection, the preschoolers used their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination to make a keychain similar to a Tasbeeh (prayer beads). As they carefully threaded each bead, the children were encouraged to think about something they are grateful for. Once their keychains were complete, we gathered together on the carpet to share our thoughts with one another.
“I’m thank you to my whole family” - Lauren
“I’m thankful for my daycare” - Callie
“I’m thankful for the snow” - Esther
Charlie, Miles and Maverick thoughtfully went through each bead on their keychains explaining what each one represented. “This one’s for my magnet toys,” Charlie shared. “This one’s for my grandma,” Miles explained. “This one’s for my Kai,” Maverick said.
This activity gave the children the chance to reflect on many things that bring them joy and comfort in their lives. It was a wonderful opportunity for the Preschoolers to practice gratitude, express their feelings and celebrate the importance of kindness and appreciation within our community.
