Finding Confidence in Our New Preschool Room

  • Preschool

Over the past few weeks, our preschool room has been filled with curiosity, exploration, and many new discoveries. As the children became familiar with their new surroundings, we noticed how naturally they began to explore the room, make choices, connect with friends, and find their own place within our classroom community.

With each passing day, we have seen the children become more comfortable with our routines and more confident in doing things for themselves. What began as something unfamiliar is becoming a space that feels like their own.

We have been intentionally encouraging the children to take the lead in many of the everyday routines throughout our day. Instead of doing things for them, we give them the time and encouragement to try. A zipper that takes a few attempts, shoes that are tricky to put on, or a toy that needs to be put back on the shelf are all opportunities for children to practice and discover what they can do.

We often hear, "I can do it!" And when we do, we step back and let them try.

Sometimes they succeed right away, and sometimes they need a little support. Either way, they are learning that it is okay to try, to make mistakes, and to try again. We can see the pride on their faces when they accomplish something independently, and those moments are helping to build a strong sense of confidence in who they are and what they can do.

Mealtimes have become an important part of this learning as well. We encourage the children to practice using their spoons and forks and, when they are ready, to serve themselves. Having the opportunity to choose how much food they would like gives children a sense of independence and responsibility while allowing them to practice important skills.

There may be a little too much on a plate, or perhaps some food doesn't quite make it where it was intended to go—and that's okay. These moments give children the opportunity to practice, problem-solve, and learn from their experiences. When something spills, we simply encourage them to help clean it up. There is no need to rush in and fix everything for them when they can be part of the solution.

The same is true when it comes to caring for our classroom. We are encouraging the children to put materials away when they are finished, bring their dishes to the appropriate place, and help with clean-up. We are beginning to see children take more ownership of these routines and even remind one another that it is time to clean up.

What may look like simple routines to us are meaningful experiences for young children. They are learning how to care for themselves, make choices, contribute to their community, and recognize their own abilities.

Most importantly, we are seeing their confidence grow.

A child carrying their own plate, carefully using a fork, helping a friend, cleaning up a spill, or proudly announcing, "I did it!" is showing us that they are beginning to see themselves as capable and independent.

These are the moments that make us pause and appreciate just how much learning can happen throughout an ordinary day.

As we continue settling into our new preschool room, we will keep providing opportunities for the children to explore, make choices, take responsibility, and try things for themselves. We will be there to encourage them when something feels challenging, celebrate their successes, and remind them that they are capable of more than they sometimes realize.

We are so excited to see where their growing confidence takes them next.
